Why are NHS ADHD wait times so long?
NHS ADHD wait times have reached unprecedented levels due to increased demand for assessments, greater awareness of ADHD, and limited NHS resources. According to the ADHD UK National Wait Times Survey (2024), the average wait across England is over 5 years, with some areas reporting waits of 7+ years. This is why many people consider private ADHD clinics, though waits vary considerably by clinic, and NHS Right to Choose does not guarantee a shorter wait.
How many people in the UK have ADHD?
Approximately 2.6 million adults in the UK are estimated to have ADHD (3-4% of the adult population), with around 85% remaining undiagnosed. About 5% of school-age children (approximately 750,000) also have ADHD. These figures come from NICE Guidelines and the ADHD Foundation.
What is shared care for ADHD medication?
Shared care is an arrangement where your GP takes over prescribing ADHD medication after you've been stabilised by a private specialist. This means you pay privately for the initial assessment and titration period, but then your ongoing medication is prescribed by your GP on the NHS, reducing long-term costs significantly. Shared care is voluntary — individual GP practices and Integrated Care Boards decide whether to enter into one.
Is ADHD Private independent?
Yes. ADHD Private is operated independently. Some clinics pay for a clearly labelled "Featured" placement, which can lift their position in the lists on our site — every list where it does says so, and our terms set out exactly how. We do not accept payment to alter a rating or to moderate a clinic's reviews. Our directory is free for patients to use.
