Adult ADHD Assessment FAQs

Can you be diagnosed with ADHD as an adult?
Absolutely. While ADHD starts in childhood, many people aren't diagnosed until adulthood. This is particularly common in women and those with the inattentive presentation. An adult diagnosis requires evidence that symptoms were present in childhood, even if not formally identified at the time.
What does an adult ADHD assessment involve?
An adult assessment typically includes a detailed clinical interview, standardised rating scales, developmental history (often with input from a family member who knew you as a child), and screening for other conditions. Assessments usually last 60-90 minutes.
Do I need someone who knew me as a child?
It's helpful but not always essential. While clinicians prefer collateral information from a parent or someone who knew you in childhood, many adults are assessed successfully without this. You may be asked to provide school reports or other historical evidence instead.
Can I use NHS Right to Choose as an adult?
Yes! 19 of these clinics accept NHS Right to Choose referrals for adults. Your GP can refer you to a private clinic with the NHS funding the assessment. This bypasses NHS waiting lists which can exceed 2-3 years.
What treatment options are available for adults?
Treatment typically includes medication (stimulants like methylphenidate or lisdexamfetamine, or non-stimulants like atomoxetine), therapy (particularly CBT adapted for ADHD), and coaching strategies. 76 clinics offer shared care arrangements for ongoing prescriptions through your GP.
Will a private diagnosis be accepted by my GP?
Most GPs will accept a private ADHD diagnosis from a registered psychiatrist at a CQC-regulated clinic. All clinics listed here meet these criteria. Your report will include recommendations your GP can use to support your ongoing care.
