I am 30-year-old and have been in and out of the NHS mental health services since the age of 11. I have diagnoses of depression, anxiety and panic disorder but no treatment or therapy ever seemed to help and I went in cycles of doing ok then breaking down and uncontrollably sobbing, unable to function. I didn’t think I could be autistic because I had a very stereotypical view of what autism was: an obsession with trains, angry outbursts of emotions, mostly effects boys. After a mental health crisis earlier this year, I started seeing a mental health nurse who suggested that perhaps I wasn’t depressed, as I didn’t feel numb and was still following routines, but perhaps I was autistic. I then began researching autism in girls and women. Reading other women’s experiences really resonated. I was on an NHS waitlist but felt I could not wait 5 years as my mental health was really suffering and I needed answers. I emailed clinics who had extensive experience of a female presentation of autism. The Autism Clinic were very prompt to reply and from the first email I felt I was in safe hands. They were very clear with their communication and kindly answered my queries. I was very nervous before my assessment but the clinician, Catherine, who did my assessment put me at ease and was so lovely. Receiving the diagnosis made so many things start to make sense. The report I received was very thorough and has helped me understand myself a bit better. I cannot thank the Autism Clinic enough and highly recommend them.

I’m 28 and did not realise I could be autistic until my therapist brought up the possibility to me. As I did more research autism just seemed to ‘fit’ and explained so much of what I have struggled with through life. I didn’t want to wait several years for a diagnosis with the NHS so did some research and found The Autism Clinic. From the first time I contacted them they were polite, friendly and could not do enough to help make the process as simple and straightforward as possible whilst also being completely non judgmental. I had my assessment on March 26th and found out later that afternoon that I do have autism. Although I’m still coming to terms with the diagnosis, Amy and her team made the process so comforting and inclusive which instead of a diagnosis usually being a negative experience, has actually been a very positive and enlightening experience for me. The team are amazing and I can’t thank them enough for everything they have done, I received my full report which I was shocked to see was 20+ pages long and it included every piece of information and recourses that I could ever need. Thank you to all of you at the clinic, you’ve quite literally helped save my life ❤️

Amy and her team at The Autism Clinic are a shining example of what comprehensive, person-centred, neuro-affirming care can be. As an adult who suspected both autism and ADHD, I wanted to make sure I selected a clinic with extensive experience dealing with complex presentations, with lived experience that they could relate to my own. From the first screening call I had with the clinic, I knew I was making the right choice. At every step of the way, Amy and her staff were always so compassionate, supportive and accommodating. The assessment process itself, whilst draining, was thorough and professional, and I always felt that the team had my best interests at heart. My preferences and wishes were respected throughout the assessment, with scope to allow me to dictate appointment cadence and timing, communication preferences, and feel comfortable to raise any concerns, questions or anxiety I had about the process. Amy and her team then worked tirelessly to ensure I was given my results as quickly as possible, significantly reducing potential anxiety during the waiting period. Following on from the assessment, I had a follow-up meeting with all the clinicians where they all took the opportunity to signpost me to a wide range of support, from blog posts and books, to personal insight and follow-on services, and answer any questions I had during the meeting. The team provided detailed strengths and diagnostic reports, and worked with me to ensure they were tailored to allow me to disclose my diagnoses in a way that suited my preferences. Aside from being a great reflection on the care and attention the clinical team took during the assessment process, the reports were also filled with additional signposting, advice and tools to ensure that I would be able to find support long after I parted ways with the clinic. Even months later, the clinic was willing to provide support and guidance around getting my diagnoses accepted by my NHS GP. This part was not the easiest, through no fault of Amy and her team, but with their support I was able to navigate this process successfully. When I came to the clinic, I was desperate and filled with questions. Upon leaving, I felt empowered, with the answers I needed. I have already recommended The Autism Clinic to a number of my friends who were considering getting assessed and would recommend them to anyone considering an assessment for themselves or a loved one.
