About Paloma Health
NHS-Funded Right to Choose Child and Young People ADHD and Autism Assessments in England.
Paloma Health is a CQC-regulated NHS Right to Choose partner assessing ADHD and autism in children and young people from their 8th to their 18th birthday, with face-to-face clinics in Exeter and Norwich and remote pathways available. Assessment through the Right to Choose pathway is NHS-funded, so there is no fee to families.

Paloma Health accepts NHS Right to Choose referrals. When it takes a referral, the NHS pays for the assessment. Some local NHS areas now limit the number of Right to Choose assessments they fund and have set minimum waits, so an NHS-funded wait can be much longer than the private wait shown for a clinic. Before your GP refers you, ask the clinic whether it is taking Right to Choose referrals from your area and what its wait is. Your GP has to make the referral, and they will need the clinic's details. We can put those into a letter you can take to your appointment.

How long is the wait time for a private ADHD assessment at Paloma Health?
We currently only offer Right to Choose assessments. Our wait time for an ADHD assessment through Right to Choose is 9 weeks.
Does Paloma Health accept NHS Right to Choose referrals?
Yes, Paloma Health accepts NHS Right to Choose referrals. This means you can request a referral from your GP to be seen by Paloma Health with the NHS funding your assessment.
Can Paloma Health prescribe ADHD medication?
If your child is eligible for ADHD medication, our NHS medication service includes a six-week titration period alongside regular monitoring by a qualified prescriber. Throughout titration and monitoring, you, your child, and their school will be asked for regular feedback on how the medication is working, ensuring it effectively supports your young person.
Does Paloma Health offer shared care arrangements?
We do not offer shared care arrangements. We will continue to prescribe medication for as long as needed under the NHS.
Can I be referred to you if I am on the waiting list with another assessment service?
If the current service you are on has a wait of more than 18 weeks, you have a legal right to change your NHS provider. You can speak to your NHS GP about getting a new referral to Paloma Health.
How does my child get referred to Paloma Health?
Your NHS GP will need to refer your child to Paloma Health. Please book an appointment with them and direct them to complete our referral form.
Autism assessments: remote (online), if the child is aged 8–18. Hybrid, with an in-person child observation in Exeter, if the child is aged 5–18. Hybrid, with an in-person child observation in Exeter, if the child is aged 2–4 — we can only accept referrals for children 2–4 if they have seen a community paediatrician who has recommended an autism assessment. Hybrid, with an in-person child observation in Norwich, if the child is aged 6–18.

My child is home-schooled, can my child still be assessed?
If your child is home-schooled we will ask for additional information from another suitable professional, or an adult from outside of the home who knows your child well. Ideally it would be someone who has seen your child in a social environment interacting with other children and has known them long enough to comment on their behaviour.
Importantly, we can only book in an ADHD assessment when we have received social context information from an adult from outside of the home who knows your child well.
Who will conduct the assessment?
Each assessment is completed by two trained assessors, specialising in diagnosing autism in children and young people.
Is a remote autism assessment as accurate as an in-person one?
Yes, research shows that remote autism assessments can be just as accurate as in-person assessments when carried out by an experienced professional.
A study by the National Autistic Society found that the move to remote assessments during the pandemic didn't affect the accuracy of diagnoses. In fact, a study published in the Archives of Disease in Childhood showed that remote assessments not only maintain diagnostic accuracy but also have high levels of parental satisfaction.
For remote assessments, we use an adapted observation that draws on the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS). This is the same adapted observation that our children who are seen face to face complete for consistency in assessment.
What does a child ADHD assessment involve?
Our ADHD assessments are thorough and evidence-based, strictly adhering to NICE and NHS guidelines. The process involves a social context questionnaire as well as a detailed discussion in an appointment with the assessor, the parent, and the young person.
Can my child be assessed for both ADHD and autism at the same time?
Yes. It is very common for ADHD and autism to co-occur. If you or your GP suspect your child shows traits of both conditions, they can refer your child to both an autism and ADHD assessment through the referral form on our website.
What is NHS Right to Choose (RtC)?
Right to Choose is a legal framework that allows you to select your preferred healthcare provider for specialist consultations and mental health assessments.
If your GP agrees that your child is showing signs of autism or ADHD and is willing to make a referral to an NHS assessment service, you have the legal right to choose which NHS provider you are referred to. You must explicitly choose Paloma Health to be referred to our service.
