I recently went to my assessment with The Retreat, York and they could not have been better. They instantly put me at ease and made everything as simple and easy as possible for me. As time went on and I became more comfortable, the people doing my assessment started to make comments on my answers and this was really helpful. I finally felt as though I was with people who understood me. It was genuinely a really validating experience for me. 100% recommend The Retreat.

Edit: I am making a couple of points very clear as the person replying to me seemed to minimise what I have originally said. Firstly, the first therapist LIED. It was not a "communication issue". They. LIED. I DID ask for a male therapist multiple times and I WAS told that "I would be waiting a very long time". I WAS told that I was asked if I wanted a male therapist when I WASN'T asked at all. This led to the effective outcome of "take whichever therapist we give you and if you want a male therapist then you probably wont be seeing anyone for a long time." Please don't try to make this appear different to what happened. The person replying to me said that they "match therapists according to needs" but both therapists did not seem a good fit for my needs at all... the "valuable" thing was not really that "valuable" after being lied to repeatedly and essentially made to feel like I was unreasonable for asking for something because I was paying for it? In particular the first therapist literally lied. They literally provably lied. I wasted six sessions with them trying to get them to listen and ACTUALLY RESPOND TO WHAT I WAS SAYING and then was told THEY were giving ME a trial session? When they didn't even listen to me? No, I'm sorry. Damage control by adjusting what I've said is not cool with me. I will email you and see what you have to say, but adjusting the meaning of the content of my review is not something I will sit and take. The retreat needs to adjust how it treats male prospective clients as it seems it's really lacking and, like wider society, doesn't seem like they are ok with dedicating any specialised thought/support on them as a group. I shouldn't be surprised, but I always am. And as for the "something valuable at the end of it" it was a piece of paper with some words on it. I can appreciate that the second person did seem to want to dedicate some actual help towards me instead of what happened with the first, but the therapy as a whole experience was not worth the money. Whether that's because of the lies, me asking for a male therapist or just not having the right therapist for it, I don't know. I just felt like I spent half of the sessions fighting for a literal bare minimum and then I was so put off from it all that I just did not want to continue. End of edit. Quite disappointed. For one, there are no male therapists who can do face to face individual appointments. I asked for one and for some reason was told that I was asked by them if I wanted a male or female therapist when I wasn't. When I asked again and refused to change the subject until I got an answer... I got the same treatment as when dealing with the NHS options. Essentially a shrug and a "we don't have male therapists unless you want to wait for a long while... so... *shrug*" The first therapist I saw was quite unresponsive and did not seem to listen effectively to what I was saying. I had to stop sessions with this therapist when they had made assertions about me during a session that very plainly made it clear I was not being heard. When I started sessions with a new therapist, I found out the first therapist lied and said it was a "trial period" which is the reason why the sessions stopped with them... Really was not happy with this fabrication. It was clear it was to protect herself, but when it concerns something as delicate as therapy for an individual who had expressed issues with people being untruthful to protect only themselves... Words can't describe. The second therapist was more attentive and responsive and definitely did give me something to take away and use for any future therapy, but unfortunately as mentioned before... the lack of male therapists left me in a situation where I felt that my lived male experience was not fully heard nor addressed. I'm sure the retreat helps a lot of people, unfortunately my experience was one of frustration and unfairness. The retreat would be more equal and fair if they had more male therapists, but the chances of that are extremely slim in my lived experience.

Adult Adhd, been with the Retreat for years and over the past 4years have not received aftercare that's required. Tritation is non existent. Lake of communication, support and shared care is also non existent sadly.
